Mitchell Wayne Davis (October 9, 1992 - May 5, 2029) was an American politician and human rights activist who served as the 50th President of the United States from January of 2029 until his deposition in a coup d'etat that April. Being only 36 years old when he was elected president in the 2028 United States presidential election and entering office at 36 years and 208 days old, Davis was by far the youngest president in United States history, surpassing Theodore Roosevelt who entered the presidency at 42 years and 322 days old. Davis was the first and only president of the United States to be born in the 1990s, and was the youngest head of state in the world when he assumed office. A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado and a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, Davis began his political career on the campus of the University of Denver during his early twenties, quickly rising to prominence in the Colorado Democratic Party as a member of the party's left-wing faction, also becoming a favorite of the Green Party of Colorado despite the fact that he did not hold membership in said party.
Davis was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2018, becoming one of the youngest state legislators in the country at the age of 26 and representing the 26th district, comprising much of his native Colorado Springs. He was later re-elected to this seat in 2020, 2022 and 2024 before announcing that he would be running in place of the term-limited Jared Polis for Governor of Colorado in 2026, at the young age of 34. Davis quickly gained the support of Polis and prevailed over fellow state legislator Alec Garnett in the 2026 primaries, becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee for governor by March and formally receiving the nomination in June. Davis prevailed over his Patriot Party opponent Lauren Boebert in a landslide with over 70% of the popular vote, with the Colorado Republican Party unable to field a candidate and the Moderate Conservative Party of Colorado refusing to run a candidate for governor. Davis was inaugurated as Colorado's 44th governor on January 5, 2027, becoming the country's youngest governor, and quickly set in place reforms that made him a nationally recognized political figure mere months after assuming office.
Despite his very young age and relatively short political career up to that point, he soon began to be considered a possible contender for president in 2028, and he announced the formation of an exploratory committee for the presidency on his 35th birthday in 2027, later announcing his campaign for President of the United States on January 1, 2028. Although initially considered an underdog and facing off in a tense primary with the former governor of Maine Janet Mills, Davis began to quickly gain ground against Mills in several key Democratic primaries, and ultimately reached the delegate threshold to secure the nomination with the Delaware primary on June 6, with Mills dropping out of the race the next day and Davis becoming the presumptive nominee, becoming the youngest major party nominee for president in United States history when he formally received the nomination on August 16, with his close friend and political ally Matthew Lawson of Minnesota receiving the vice presidential nomination at the age of 39, with Lawson becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ person to be nominated for president or vice president by a major party in United States history.
The 2028 election was widely expected to be a shoo-in for the Democratic Party, with the right-wing vote being heavily torn apart by internal struggles between different factions. Ultimately Davis' strongest rival would turn out to be the Moderate Conservative nominee, Eric Holcomb of Indiana, whose unexpectedly strong performance in 2028 prevented Davis from securing the minimum 270 electors needed in the Electoral College to win the presidency, and bringing the vote to the United States House of Representatives, where Holcomb would have a greater chance of being able to flip the election in his favor. This would be to no avail, however, as Davis would prevail over Holcomb in the House of Representatives by 12 votes, and was formally declared the President-elect of the United States on January 3, 2029. Davis prioritized the implementation of single-payer healthcare, the protection of LGBT rights, as well as protections and assistance for Native American groups. Davis was criticized, however, for his relatively lax policies on gun control both as governor and as president, although he did support the implementation of stronger background checks on gun owners. Davis also intended on increasing the minimum pay wage, cancelling student debt and enforcing United States antitrust law to prevent monopolies from growing in size, while also fighting government corruption.
Davis' presidency also saw a increased effort to return Native lands, increased pressure being placed on state governments to implement laws protecting minority groups, and Davis' presidential administration launched a lawsuit in the Supreme Court against the state of Arkansas just a day after entering office, arguing that laws within the state that had attempted to block transgender individuals, especially minors, from getting adequate access to healthcare that would assist them in transitioning was unconstitutional, launching similar lawsuits in the courts of appeals against the states of Texas, Tennessee and Alabama over the next week. During a press conference on February 3, Davis declared that "no compromises will be sought in securing the equality of all Americans, regardless of their race, sexuality, gender identity or background", and the Davis administration was accused several times of overstepping its authority during its short existence, particularly when it attempted to open an investigation against Chief Justice John Roberts, accusing Roberts of corruption, as well as when Davis authorized military force be used to dissolve the Patriot-dominated government of Wyoming on February 9 after the Wyoming Legislature passed a law blocking Democratic and Moderate Conservative candidates from appearing on ballots in the state, making Wyoming a de facto one party state, later appointing Libertarian congressman Marshall Burt as interim governor of Wyoming on February 13.
Despite this, Davis proved to be a popular president, gaining the respect and even support of much of the Moderate Conservatives, nominating Peter Meijer, the Moderate Conservative vice presidential nominee in 2028, as well as a co-chairman of the Meijer hypermarket chain as Secretary of Commerce after the sudden death of Benjamin Armstrong in March of 2029, and Meijer would be confirmed by the United States Senate for that position on April 1, only two days before Davis and the government was overthrown in a coup. Davis and Meijer developed a close friendship after the 2028 election, and with Meijer becoming the de facto leader of the Moderate Conservatives after the more conservative Holcomb's defeat in the presidential election in 2028, Meijer managed to secure the support of the Moderate Conservatives for Davis in Congress, allowing Davis' supporters to hold a strong majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. In addition to his social policies, Davis supported cutting back on United States military funding, encouraging the redirection of cut military funds to the construction and maintenance of infrastructure and the protection of the environment.
Davis was the first president since James Buchanan to never marry, although he was known to be romantically involved with both men and women, and it was posthumously found that Davis was a closeted bisexual, with one document purported to be from Davis indicating that he was weeks away from making a speech where he would formally come out as such to the nation when the April 2029 coup d'etat occurred. Davis was overthrown in a far-right coup coordinated by supporters of the far-right Patriot Party within the United States Armed Forces on April 3, 2029, while vice president Lawson was killed by the military after a several hour standoff between Lawson and forces assisting in the coup. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the former congresswoman from Georgia who was the Patriot vice presidential nominee in 2028 was declared his successor by the junta and a several year period of political repression and right-wing dictatorship followed. On May 5, 2029, Davis was publicly executed on live television in a move condemned by almost the entirety of the United Nations as well as former presidents Mike Pence, Barack Obama and even Donald Trump. Davis is often considered a martyr of modern socialist political parties and movements in the former United States, and is often ranked in the upper tier of United States presidents, despite his truncated term.
