Málaga Diego Fernández (28 June 1559 - 17 March 1623), also known as Governor Málaga, was the third Governor of Canterbury, from 1579 to his death in 1623. He was widely known for his incredible wealth and excellent leadership as the Governor, and has been described as one of the most important and famous people in Canterburian history.

Biography[]

Early years[]

Málaga Diego Fernández was born on 28 June 1559 in Madrid, Spain to an extremely wealthy and powerful family. His father, Oscar Vázquez (1529-1611), was originally from Málaga. His mother, Eva Maria (1530-1613), was from Zaragoza in Aragon. Fernández grew up in Madrid. Fernández was named after his father's birthplace, who was a proficient military soldier under the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I.

Fernández moved to Santiago de Compostela in 1578.

Governor of Canterbury[]

In November of 1579, at the age of 20, a letter was sent to his house. Because of his wealth, experience and power, he was asked to become the Governor of Canterbury, and he accepted and sailed out to Ciudad de Miguel a few days later. 

In 1582, Fernández encountered a devastating tornado, which destroyed large swathes of town.

Death[]

On March 17th, 1623, Ferdinand was assassinated in his sleep by Juan Vélez Capitan.

Fernández has remained a well-respected leader throughout the centuries, and has been honored in art and cinema across the nation.
